Today we are spoilt for choice when it comes to indoor and shade-loving plants. Gone are the day’s when Nanna’s Aspidistra was the only plant available to enhance your home. We have access to such a vast selection of plants – ferns, palms, tropical species – all of which are more than suitable for indoor situations. Low light? No problem – there is a plant ideal for your home or office.
And it’s not just about beauty – studies have shown the health benefits of bringing the garden indoors. Stress levels are reduced and the air is purified. Indoor plants help to improve your mood and boost healing.
Some of the star air purifying performers include the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.), Devil’s Ivy or Pothos (Epipremnum sp.) and the beautiful Philodendron sp. with its heart shaped leaves.
Tip: We find that watering our indoor plants with a half strength mixture of seaweed extract and a general purpose liquid fertiliser is a recipe to keep them healthy and happy. We also add a few drops of Neem Oil to our mix to protect them from those pesky little fungus gnats.
We find regular wiping of the leaves of indoor plants with a soft cloth and a gentle leaf serum keeps them not only clean and shiny, but assists in keeping their little air pores (stomata) open.
And shade-loving plants are not necessarily just for indoors – many outdoor situations such as under trees, in dappled light, in a pergola or patio space or if you have a tricky area that gets no direct sunlight are perfect examples. We have a beautiful range of high quality Camellias sp. available from Easter that may be container grown or in the ground if you have an acidic soil profile.
Dry shade under trees? Clivia sp. or Plectranthus sp. thrive in these difficult spots.
